Best Propane Forge Burners?
Most people who ask me that question seem to want to know how to burn more propane rather than burn it hotter. Oxy does not really make it hotter so much as allow you to burn more. Forced air allows you to burn more the same way adding an oxy bottle does. If that is the way you want to go with making a primitive forge, and you use a weed burner or a torch - you need to make a hole in the side of the forge. Place the burner just OUTSIDE the hole. You will have to move it in and out some to find where it burns the best.
I'm building a propane forge using an 11 gallon air tank with 2' of ceramic wool liner (plus refractory cement and ITC-100). The diameter of the tank is 13 inches, so my heating chamber diameter will be roughly 8 inches. This gives me a total chamber volume of ~1200 in3.
If I want to forge weld, what are some recommendations for burners to use? I don't need the entire chamber to reach forge welding temperatures, but I'd like to be able to forge weld ~8 inch billets inside. Ideally I want to spend less than $200 total on burners, but I'd be willing to spend more if needed. Thanks!
